Got off easy
After a few weeks of intermittent but surmountable problems with my car, it finally said "fix me". Turn the key, and it was like I didn't turn the ignition at all, as if the battery wasn't connected at all. Weird stuff going on when the key wasn't in the ignition, with the gauges moving all around on their own and various solenoids clicking like crazy.

Called AAA for a tow, and when I described the problem the car drive said "yep, that's a bad battery". Hooked it up and gave it a jump and it started right up, drove it to the mechanic and had the battery replaced. And in retrospect some of the earlier weird stuff now makes sense if a dying battery was the cause, I've just never had a battery go bad like that before.

All in all, I got off pretty easy, with a relatively minor and less expensive repair. I was more worried that it would turn out to be some major electrical system problem, even the whole car computer going bad, and cost many hundreds of dollars. As if I could afford anything right now anyway.

PS AAA is worth every penny.

Maybe you're car is waiting until you're really short on cash to have a major problem.
